FSU Softball Sweeps Shaw 8-4 and 11-2 in CIAA Divisional Doubleheader

Raleigh, N.C. - Fayetteville State (11-21, 10-4 CIAA, 7-1 South) is now tied with Saint Augustine's for the CIAA Southern Division lead with a pair of softball wins over Shaw University at the Worthdale Park in Raleigh, N.C. The Broncos swept the Bears 8-4 and 11-2 in the doubleheader.

The showdown against the Falcons for the divisional title will take place on Sunday, April 22nd at the Lions Park field in Raleigh, N.C. The start time for the deciding twinbill is 12 noon.

Fayetteville State collected a hit for each of the 19 runs scored between the two games. Shaw University (10-16, 8-6 CIAA, 4-4 South) recorded 12 hits and scored six runs but committed five errors.

In the opening game, FSU took a 3-1 in the third inning when Madison Mendoza hit a bases loaded three-run double into center field; one run shy of a grand slam. The Broncos increased the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning and put the game on ice in the fifth with four runs off three hits.

Shaw managed three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before the end of the game.

Nikki Brown and Mendoza led the way with two hits each. Mendoza tallied four RBI.

Fayetteville State scored 11 runs in the second contest of the doubleheader with 11 hits.

Maggie Smith crossed home four times with one hit. Brittany Lee, Shi-Cara Goins, and Madison Mendoza each had two hits. HaLee Knowles led the way with three RBI.
