Final Stats

PETERSBURG, VA – The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos were eliminated from the 2013 CIAA Softball Championship on Friday morning after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Virginia State Lady Trojans at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

The contest was a pitcher’s duel highlighted by starters Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) of Fayetteville State and Virginia State’s Jessica Mattia. Bell, despite taking the loss, surrendered no earned runs on four hits and no walks in six innings of work. Mattia pitched all seven innings to pick up the win.

The two teams were held scoreless through the first three and a half innings as both pitchers gave up two hits apiece. The Lady Trojans broke through in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead following an FSU throwing error.

Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC), Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC), Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and Jessica Randolph (Jr., Pinetops, NC) each recorded one hit for the Lady Broncos.

Cameryn Smith had a team-high two hits for Virginia State. Verlisha Brandon and Jameshia Smith also collected one hit apiece.
