Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's softball team loss both games in their doubleheader with St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon from Leonard R. Sanders Athletic Field (Seabrook Park). The Knights battled hard for a 7-2 game one victory and outlasted the rain for a 5-3 win in game two.
Game #1 - St. Andrews 7, Fayetteville State 2
Neither team managed to score a run in the first two innings of the contest. At the top of the third with bases loaded, Brianna Shurtleff was walked and credited with a RBI once Samantha Stewart crossed home plate. Mika Tanji reached base on a fielder and picked up two RBIs off an errand throw. With no hits in the third, the Knights closed out the inning up 3-0.
The Lady Broncos scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman pitcher Alicia Frank homered over the left field fence to put FSU on the scoreboard. Heading into the seventh and final inning, St. Andrews held onto a 4-1 lead. The Knights put additional pressure on the Lady Broncos down the stretch by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh.
Frank singled to left field in the bottom of the final inning. Senior Aja Sawyer got to first off an error by the left fielder and Frank advance to second. Senior Shatia Gidrey came up to bat and singled to left field, advancing Sawyer to second and bringing home Frank for the team's final run in the contest.
Pitcher Samantha Stewart was credited with the win and improves to 9-24 this season for the Knights.
Game #2 - St. Andrews 5, Fayetteville State 3
Fayetteville State struck first in game two. Alicia Frank hit a RBI single; an error by the outfielder allowed junior Dominique Mills to advance and come home for the score in the bottom of the first. No other runs were tallied for either team until the top of the fourth.
That's when St. Andrews' Samantha Stewart singled, advanced to second on the throw, and brought home two runners that were on base. The Knights were ahead 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth.
As the rain began to fall, it looked as if the weather would be the determining factor in the contest (possible cancellation). Both teams played through it, and the Lady Broncos would take the lead in the sixth. Aja Sawyer drilled a two RBI double to right center and put FSU in front 3-2 before the conclusion of the inning.
St. Andrews responded in the seventh with a three RBI homer by Morgan Farroll. The homerun put the Knights ahead and ultimately decided the game. No additional runs were scored and St. Andrews took home the 5-3 victory.
Fayetteville State falls to 14-14 overall with the non-conference loss. The Lady Broncos will return to action on Sunday, April 13th, when they take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University. The conference doubleheader is set to begin at 3:30 pm from Leonard R. Sanders Athletic Field (Seabrook Park).
