Charlotte, NC -- The Fayetteville State University women's softball team defeated Livingstone College 9-0 on Saturday, April 8th, then split a divisional doubleheader (L, 5-1 | W, 11-5) against Johnson C. Smith University on Sunday, April 9th at the Biddleville Park. FSU improves to 15-15 overall, 8-2 in the CIAA, and 4-1 in the Southern Division.

On day one, the Lady Broncos disposed of Livingstone in five innings. Sophomore utility Alex White (Fayetteville, NC) scored a run in the first inning off a sacrifice ground out by junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC). FSU exploded in the second inning with four hits and five runs, including a 3-RBI triple from White.

The Lady Blue Bears allowed two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth. Fayetteville State concluded the game in the fifth due to the NCAA eight run rule. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) earned the shutout victory. She pitched all five innings with 10 strikeouts and only three hits.

Game two of the doubleheader versus Livingstone was cancelled. The Lady Blue Bears only had eight active players available for the second contest and could not field a full roster.

On the second day of competition, FSU travelled to the "Queen City" to face the Golden Bulls of JCSU. Johnson C. Smith maintained an advantage throughout the initial contest. The Lady Broncos faced a 5-0 deficit after five innings of play. JCSU scored two runs in the first, a run in the third, and two more runs in the fifth.

Fayetteville State produced their only run in the top of the sixth. Junior leftfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) from third base. FSU went scoreless in the top of the seventh to account for the 5-1 loss in game one.



The Lady Broncos came out with much more firepower in game two. Green smacked a homerun as the second batter in the first inning. Goins singled to take base and eventually scored with bases loaded. JCSU had three hits and three runs in the bottom of the first. FSU trailed 3-2 going into the second.

The Golden Bulls fell behind again in the second inning. Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) tripled down the right field line to bring in three runs. Fayetteville State held a 5-3 lead until the top of the fourth. Smith homered in the fourth (6th homerun of the season) to extend the FSU lead to 6-3.

In the fifth, the Lady Broncos added a run and JCSU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. The game became out of reach after Fayetteville State produced three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. Knowles had a 2-RBI homerun in the sixth and senior second baseman Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) scored a run in the seventh to account for the 11-5 final.

Howard earned the victory on the mound and Walker checked in for the save. Howard pitched three innings with five hits, three runs, three walks, and two strikeouts. Walker pitched the final four innings with four strikeouts, along with four hits and two runs allowed.

FSU returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 22nd against Shaw University. First pitch in the divisional doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Seabrook Recreation Center on Saunders Field.
