FSU Broncos Split Divisional Twin Bill with Winston-Salem State

Fayetteville, N.C. – Fayetteville State opened its CIAA Southern Division tilt with a split doubleheader against the Rams of Winston-Salem State on Friday afternoon at the Lamon Street Park, capturing a 6-5 opening bout but suffering a 12-2 loss to close out the day.

With the split, the Broncos sit tied at second in the division with a 4-4 conference record and a 1-1 standing with WSSU. Fayetteville State has an overall record of 5-19 while Winston-Salem State slightly better 6-21.

FSU took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning with Maggie Smith stealing home for the Broncos first score. The Rams evened the score in the second but gave up four hits in the bottom of the third which allowed FSU to advance ahead 4-2.

Courtney Pierre hit a two-run homer over the right-center field fence to move the Broncos ahead of the Rams 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Winston-Salem State battled back with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. A rally of two hits helped the Rams close within one on two runs.

Now leading by one run (6-5) with bases loaded, the Broncos secured the win on a fielder’s choice forced play at second base.

Fayetteville State did not fare as well in the nightcap giving up 11 hits and 12 runs with two errors. The Broncos could only manage two runs from its two hits.

FSU will travel to the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday, April 11th for a non-conference doubleheader.
