FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State softball team wrapped up its regular season on Sunday afternoon by winning one game of a doubleheader against the Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons at Seabrook Park. The Lady Broncos rallied in game one for a 6-5 victory before falling in game two 8-6. Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) had two RBI each on the afternoon.
Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) collected two hits in game one as FSU used timely base running to win in its final at-bat. Fayetteville State held a one run (3-2) lead until the top of the fourth when Saint Augustine’s scored once to tie the game at 3-3. The Lady Falcons would take a 5-3 lead following a two-run top of the sixth; before the Lady Broncos began their rally plating one run in the bottom-half of the inning.
SAU starting pitcher Michelle Shackelford had trouble finding the strike zone in the bottom of the seventh and walked the first three batters she faced. Her first wild pitch of the inning allowed Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) to score from third; and then loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Henderson-Holmes. Shackelford’s second wild pitch proved to be the game-winner for Fayetteville State as pinch-runner Kalneisha Drawhorn (So., Rowland, NC) beat the play at home plate.
Embler went the distance for FSU on the mound as she walked just one batter while striking out five. Brittany Freeman (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) contributed one hit.
Shackelford walked 12 batters over the course of 6.1 innings to take the loss while allowing six runs. Daja White and Jennifer Plair posted three hits for Saint Augustine’s; while Daja White and Jo’Landa White had two RBI each.
The Lady Broncos held their “Senior Day” festivities between games one and two. Fayetteville State honored Washington and Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC); who were playing in their final home games with the program.
The Lady Falcons used a five-run sixth inning to defeat FSU in game two. The Lady Broncos tallied eight hits in the contest led by two each from Washington, Taylor and Embler.
The duo of Embler and Henderson-Holmes drove in two runs apiece. Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) suffered the loss in game two following a nine-strikeout, one-walk performance.
Daja White and Taylor Walters provided three hits each for Saint Augustine’s; and Shackelford had two RBI. Shackelford also picked up the win in relief tossing 3.1 innings to go with four walks and four strikeouts.
Fayetteville State returns to action Apr. 18-20 when it travels to Petersburg, VA for the 2013 CIAA Championship.
