FAYETTEVILLE, NC - On a weekend the NCAA celebrates Student-Athletes, Fayetteville State paused during its Spring White & Blue Football Game and softball double-header to recognize the achievements of its student-athletes, who had a 3.0 gpa or better.
Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos, Winston-Salem State (19-10, 12-1 CIAA) enjoyed a 1-0 and 3-1 two-game victory on the Leonard R. Sanders Field in Seabrook Park.
The first of the twin bill came down to the final inning. WSSU's Katrina Bartlett led off with a triple to left field. Andreya O'Brien singled up the middle to drive in the leading run.
In final set of the game, Fayetteville State (8-17, 7-5 CIAA) advanced itself into scoring position when Sierra Henderson-Holmes doubled and proceeded to third on FSU's second out. With two down and a runner on third, the Lady Broncos struck out swinging for its first loss of the CIAA Southern Division.
In the second game, Winston-Salem State bounced to a 2-0 lead after the fourth and fifth inning. The Lady Broncos hit the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Jessica Randolph and Ivory Gladden singled to reach base. Erica Rodriguez pinched in to bat and reached first on a fielder's choice. The batted ball was scooped up be the second baseman, which tagged Gladden for the second out and attempted to turn a double-play by throwing to first. The throw became errant which allowed Randolph to score on the play.
Ahead by one, Winston-Salem State's Bartlett hit a RBI single for a two-run cushion.
Needing a seventh inning rally, the Lady Broncos fall to 4-2 in the Southern Division as the Lady Rams remain undefeated.
Fayetteville State will travel to Augusta, GA for a match-up against Paine on Sunday and to Columbia, SC for a rematch against Benedict.
