Mount Olive, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team suffered losses (4-0, 6-5) to the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday, April 4th at the Cassell Field. FSU moves to 13-14 overall, while the Trojans improve to 20-26 in the standings.

The Lady Broncos were shut out in game one with only three hits. Junior leftfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC), sophomore utility Alex White (Fayetteville, NC), and junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) recorded the three hits for FSU.

Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) pitched all seven innings with four runs and four hits allowed. Kylie Ward earned the shut out win for the Trojans with four strikeouts, three hits, and one walk.

Game two got off to a sluggish start. Neither team scored the first two innings. Mount Olive broke the scoreless drought with three hits and two runs in the bottom of the third. Fayetteville State trailed 2-0 until the sixth. The Lady Broncos exploded with four hits and four runs in the top of the sixth.

Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) and Smith both singled facing two outs in the inning. White loaded the bases with a single to the shortstop gap. Lee earned a RBI after being hit by the pitch; which scored Knowles from third. On the next at-bat, junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) smacked a 3-RBI double down the left field line.

FSU held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Trojans tied the game 4-4 with two unearned runs off errors. The contest remained knotted up at 4-4 at the end of the sixth and seventh innings.



In the eighth and extra inning, Green was placed on second base. Lee picked up the RBI with a double to left field. Mount Olive faced a 5-4 deficit going into the bottom of the eighth. The Trojans managed to score two runs and escape with a 6-5 win on their home field.

Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) stood on the mound for game two. She pitched all seven innings with nine hits, six runs, and three strikeouts. Knowles had three hits in the second game, while Adams and Lee combined for five RBIs.

The Lady Broncos will return to action on Saturday, April 8th in a divisional doubleheader against Livingstone College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Salisbury, NC.
