FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State softball team moved its conference winning streak to seven games on Tuesday afternoon after sweeping the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls in a doubleheader at Seabrook Park. The Lady Broncos captured the first game by an 8-2 score and held off a late JCSU rally to win game two 8-5. Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) each had four RBI to lead FSU offensively.
Embler continued her winning ways on the mound against conference opponents in game one. The reigning CIAA Pitcher of the Week tossed her eighth complete game of the season and gave up two runs to go with one walk and eight strikeouts. FSU’s offense collected 14 hits led by three each from Henderson-Holmes and Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC). Henderson-Holmes recorded a team-high three RBI; while Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) drove in two runs each.
The Fayetteville State offense provided Embler all the run support she would need over the course of three innings. The Lady Broncos led Johnson C. Smith 8-0 after four innings as Embler held JCSU to just two hits. FSU went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second; and broke the game open with three runs in the third and four in the fourth.
The Lady Golden Bulls got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth inning; but would not do anything else offensively the rest of the way. JCSU was held to two hits over the final two innings of play.
Melissa Vierra took the loss for JCSU in game one as she allowed all eight runs on 14 hits, no walks and one strikeout in six innings of work. Jasmine Jackson led Johnson C. Smith with two hits and one RBI.
In game two, the Lady Broncos raced out to a 5-0 lead after just two innings. FSU increased its lead to six (7-1) after the fourth; but the Lady Golden Bulls made it a two run game at 7-5 following a four-run sixth inning. Fayetteville State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Embler’s RBI single to push its lead to 8-5.
Embler went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI in game two while Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) added three hits. Four different JCSU hitters had two hits apiece and Alexandra Buckley posted four RBI.
Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) allowed three earned runs over seven innings to earn the victory. Vierra suffered the loss giving up eight runs on 12 hits and one strikeout.
