Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team won game one 7-5 then dropped game two 7-5 in a non-conference doubleheader against Talladega College on Wednesday, March 22nd at Lamon Street Park. FSU moves to 10-10 overall, the Tornadoes go to 9-19 in the standings.

Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) had a scoreless, no-hitter for four innings of the first game. Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC), junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC), and junior left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) all doubled in the bottom of the first. Goins and Knowles scored.

Knowles had a 2-RBI homerun in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 FSU lead. Talladega gave up four hits and three runs in the fourth. Senior centerfielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) utilized some speed to record a 2-RBI triple to centerfield.

The Tornadoes had a single in the fifth for their first hit of the contest. Fayetteville State held a 7-0 advantage entering the seventh and final inning. Talladega managed to produce three hits and five runs all in the seventh. Green struck out Janisha Thomas to get the last out of the game.

Knowles had team-highs of three RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored. Green earned the win with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and runs. She improves to 6-2 on the season.

Both teams scored their first runs in the second inning of game two. Brittany Blair had a RBI double to centerfield for Amani Durant to score. Talladega held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the inning. Knowles blasted her second homerun of the day to left field and tied the game 1-1. She had the only hit and run of the inning.



The Tornadoes created some damage with five runs and two hits in the third. Vanessa Oakley had a 2-RBI double followed by a 2-RBI homerun from Durant. Fayetteville State cut their deficit to 6-2 with a run scored in the bottom of the fourth. Jamara Thomas homered in the top of the fifth to give Talladega a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, FSU had three hits and three runs, including a 3-RBI homerun from Smith. Neither team had a hit or a run after the fifth to account for the 7-5 final.

Knowles, Smith, and Gladden all had two hits. Knowles also had 10 putouts and two runs scored. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) pitched two and two quarter innings with five hits and six runs allowed. Green finished out the game with three strikeouts along with four hits and one run allowed.

Fayetteville State returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 29th against UNC Pembroke. First pitch in this regional rivalry is slated for 3:00 p.m. at the Lamon Street Park.
