FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Fayetteville State first baseman Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) recorded a career-high six RBI, including a grand slam, on Thursday afternoon as the Fayetteville State softball team defeated the Virginia Union Panthers 16-4 during the CIAA Round-Up held at Arnette Park. Locklear’s three hits were part of a collective effort offensively for the Lady Broncos as they posted a season-best 20 hits. Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) had a team-high four hits for FSU.
Fayetteville State scored in each inning against the Panthers as every starter had at least one hit in the contest. The six RBI tallied by Locklear is the most by a Lady Bronco since Lugenia Beatty drove in six against Livingstone on Mar. 17, 2010. Embler’s four hits added to a solid offensive output for the junior transfer as she scored three times and drove in two runs. Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) and Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC) also had three hits for FSU; while Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) contributed two RBI.
The Lady Broncos jumped ahead of Virginia Union 9-0 following the third inning as they scored one run in the first, five in the second and three in the third. The Panthers answered with four runs of their own in the third and fourth innings combined; but it was not enough as Fayetteville State continued to pile on the runs. FSU tallied one run each in the fourth and fifth innings; and ended the game with a five-run sixth inning. Locklear’s first career grand slam highlighted the sixth inning as it represented her second home run of the season.
Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) went the distance for Fayetteville State; and walked just one batter while striking out six en route to the victory. Danielle McEachern suffered the loss for Virginia Union as she gave up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits, three walks and one strikeout in two innings pitched.
Shireese Borden and Kristina Caldwell had three hits each for the Panthers. Shaquandra Brown drove in a team-high two RBI.
