Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team defeated Virginia State University (3-0) and Chowan University (1-0) on the third and final day of the 2017 CIAA Roundup hosted by Johnson C. Smith University at Nevin Community Park. FSU improves to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Schedules had to be altered due postponements and delays from wet field conditions. Fayetteville State faced Virginia State in a mostly clear Sunday morning matchup. The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Senior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) and junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) scored unearned runs off a fielder’s choice and error by the VSU infield.

The Lady Broncos added two hits and a run in the bottom of the fourth. Howard hit a single to left field which scored junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) from third base. No other runs were scored in the ball game.

Green pitched the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and only three hits allowed. She also had individual team-highs of two hits and one run scored. Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) had two RBIs and one hit, along with 10 putouts.

Zoe Howard took the mound for the second game versus Chowan. She pitched all seven innings with only six hits, three strikeouts, and no runs allowed.

Knowles singled up the middle in the top of the second. Junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) tripled down the right field line to bring home Knowles. That would end up being the game winning run. Knowles, Adams, and senior centerfielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) each had one hit in the contest.

Fayetteville State returns home for their next game against Talladega College on Wednesday, March 22nd at Lamon Street Park. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
