FSU Broncos Softball Defeats Bowie State 13-7 for First Conference Victory

Elizabeth City, NC – Fayetteville State opened conference play at the CIAA Softball Roundup with a 13-7 victory over Bowie State University. The Broncos improved to 2-11 on the season.

Bowie State (2-5, 1-1 CIAA) opened the first inning with three runs and tacked on two more before Fayetteville State could get on the scoreboard at the bottom of the third.

Down 5-0, Fayetteville State produced one of its best innings of the season behind six hits and seven runs. Rachel Rodriguez recorded the Broncos first hit of the game with a single to the left side. Two hits later, Rodriguez crossed home when HaLee Knowles singled through the left side. Madison Mendoza scored on a wild pitch. Brittany Lee hit a three-run RBI with a double to centerfield. Rodriguez singled again, as the Broncos batted through the lineup, for an RBI. A fielding error by the Bulldogs third baseman gave way for FSU’s seventh score.

With a 7-5 lead, FSU held Bowie State scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning while increasing its lead to 9-5 heading into the sixth inning.

After the Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the sixth, Lee reached base with a bunt that allowed Courtney Pierre, who previously hit a single, to score the Broncos 10th run. On the following play, a throwing error by the third baseman gave the Broncos a 12-5 lead. Rodriguez had a sacrifice bunt for the 13th run.

Eight of nine Broncos finished with a hit.  Mendoza led with a team-high three (3) hits with a double and two singles.



Fayetteville State allowed five (5) hits and seven (7) runs while committing two errors. Bowie State allowed three batters on base via errors.

The Broncos will face Virginia Union to close out the first day of the CIAA round-up.
