LADY BRONCOS SOFTBALL FINISHES 1-1 AFTER DAY ONE OF THE CIAA ROUNDUP

Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team lost to Bowie State University (1-0) then defeated Virginia Union University (10-2) in the opening day of the CIAA Roundup hosted by Johnson C. Smith University at Nevins Community Park. FSU moves to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA.

In the first contest, Bowie State and the Lady Broncos remained scoreless until the fourth inning with only two hits allowed. Megan Visele doubled to left centerfield in the bottom of the fourth for BSU. Jaelyn Belt followed with a RBI single bringing Visele home. That would be the only run scored in the game.

Stefanie Ray earned the 1-0 shutout win for Bowie State. She pitched seven innings with three hits allowed. Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) pitched a complete game with six hits allowed, one run, and six strikeouts. Junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) had two hits with three at-bats. Junior utility Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) had the only other hit with three plate appearances.

Game two against Virginia Union remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. Goins ripped a triple down the right field line to score Green and senior centerfield Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC). Senior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) had a sacrifice ground out to the shortstop to bring home Goins.

The Lady Panthers produced a 2-0 fourth inning to cut their deficit to 3-2 going into the fifth. FSU had four hits and four runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. Green and Goins both hit doubles, while senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) had a 2-RBI triple to right centerfield. VUU trailed 7-2 after five innings played.

 

 

In the bottom of the sixth, Green blasted a 2-RBI homerun to centerfield for Fayetteville State to take a 9-2 lead. The game came to a conclusion with a RBI single from junior left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) for Goins to score. The Lady Broncos claimed the 10-2 victory due to the NCAA eight-run rule.

Walker had the win on the mound with only four hits and two runs allowed in six innings pitched. She also had six strikeouts on the afternoon. Green and Goins both had three hits and three runs scored. Walker and Smith produced two hits and two runs batted in.

FSU returns to action of the second day of competition in the CIAA Roundup on Saturday, March 18th. The Lady Broncos will face Chowan University at 3:00 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Virginia State University. All games will be played at Nevins Community Park in Charlotte, NC.
