Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team earned a 6-0 shutout win over West Liberty University, followed by a 9-1 loss in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, March 13th at the Lamon Street Park. FSU moves to 6-8 in the overall standings, while the Hilltoppers shift to 3-5 overall.

FSU recorded four hits and two runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Senior third baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) and sophomore utility Alex White (Fayetteville, NC) both had RBIs in the inning. West Liberty faced a 2-0 deficit until the bottom of the third.

The Lady Broncos added three runs and two hits in the third, including a 2-RBI single to right center from junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ). In the fourth, junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) singled to get on base. She later scored an unearned run off a passed ball. The Hilltoppers trailed 6-0 at the end of four innings.

Neither team scored a run in the last three innings. Green recorded her first shut out of the season. She pitched all seven innings with only two hits allowed and one strikeout.

West Liberty got off to a better offensive start in the second contest. FSU allowed two runs in the first and third innings for a 4-0 deficit until the bottom of the fifth. Senior centerfielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) got into scoring position after blasting a triple to right field. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) reached first base and earned a RBI off a fielding error.



WLU piled on with two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh. The Lady Broncos only scored a run in the fifth and dropped the second game 9-1.

Taylor Wright had the win for West Liberty with four and a third innings pitched. Marley Thompson pitched the final two and two-third innings. Wright allowed one run, two hits, and had four Ks. Thompson also had four strikeouts with no runs or hits allowed.

Fayetteville State and West Liberty will clash again on Tuesday, March 14th at Lamon Street Park. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
