MURFREESBORO, NC – The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos suffered a 4-3 loss to the Virginia State Trojans on Sunday afternoon in CIAA softball action. The Lady Broncos attempted a late inning rally but came up short after falling behind early in the contest. Jessica Randolph (Jr., Pinetops, NC) led FSU with two hits on the afternoon.

Virginia State (5-9, 5-1 CIAA) posted a three-run second inning against Fayetteville State starter Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) to put it ahead 3-0. Jameshia Smith had the lone RBI in the inning with her double. Smith increased VSU’s lead to 4-0 in the fourth with an RBI single.

The Lady Broncos (2-19, 1-2 CIAA) slowly chipped away at the lead scoring a single run each in the fourth and sixth innings. Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) got FSU on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the fourth and Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) plated Kelsey Urquhart (Fr., Sneads Ferry, NC) on her RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Fayetteville State’s comeback effort fell one run short in the seventh as Amanda Anderson (So., Hope Mills, NC) scored on an RBI single by Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC).

Bell went the distance for the second straight outing but took the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Jessica Mattia pitched a complete game for Virginia State and gave up three runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts to earn the victory.

Randolph went 2-for-2 at the plate for FSU while four players added one hit each. Smith recorded a team-high three hits and two RBI for the Trojans and Jamilia Smith contributed two hits and two runs scored.

The Lady Broncos will take the next eight days off before returning to Fayetteville to host West Chester in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 19 beginning at 3 p.m. Game two of the doubleheader is slated to start at 5 p.m.
