The Fayetteville State softball team wrapped up play at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday afternoon after falling  to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals and Northern State Wolves at the Osceola County Sports Complex. The Lady Broncos opened with a 9-3 loss to Saginaw Valley State and followed with an 8-2 defeat against Northern State. Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) led the way for FSU offensively with three hits in the two contests.


Saginaw Valley State quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Fayetteville State (1-17) after two innings of play. The Cardinals plated one run in the first and broke the game open with a five-run second inning. Brittany Freeman (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) put the Lady Broncos on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout in the fourth but Saginaw Valley State answered back with a run each in the fifth and sixth innings. FSU trimmed its deficit to 8-3 in the sixth on a two-run double by Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC). The Cardinals added a run in the seventh to make it a 9-3 game.

Embler suffered the loss pitching 6.0 innings giving up eight runs (three earned) on eleven hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Sarah Vrabel picked up the win tossing 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC), Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) and Kalneisha Drawhorn (So., Rowland, NC) had two hits each for Fayetteville State. Kaitlyn Kenyon led Saginaw Valley State with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

In game two against the Wolves, FSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Embler’s RBI single. Northern State came back with seven unanswered runs over the course of two innings. The Wolves tied the game with one run in the first and followed with six runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) drove in Haley Wood (Fr., Spring Hope, NC) on an RBI single in the fifth. Northern State made it 8-2 after scoring one run in the sixth.

Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) took the loss in game two for Fayetteville State giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits, one walk and no strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Debbie Evans earned the victory after going 5.0 innings in which she allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, three walks and five strikeouts.

Embler led the Lady Bronco offense with two hits and was one of two players, along with Taylor, to drive in one run. Haley Covias had a team-high two hits for the Wolves while Kelsey Robling recorded three RBI.

Fayetteville State will open conference play this weekend (Mar. 9-10) as it travels to Murfreesboro, NC to participate in a CIAA Round-Up hosted by Chowan University. The Lady Broncos face Elizabeth City State (1 p.m.) and Chowan (3 p.m.) on Saturday before taking on Virginia State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
