FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Jessica Randolph, the reigning CIAA Player and Offensive Player of the Week, went 5-for-6 with four RBI as the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos split a doubleheader with Barton on Sunday.
Randolph (Fr., Pinetops, NC) belted a double and a triple and drove in four runs as the Lady Broncos picked up a 12-9 victory in game 1 of the double-dip. Barton won the second game 20-5.
Fayetteville State (6-4) trailed 4-1 entering the fifth inning of the first game, but sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs - two of them on a Randolph RBI double - to take a 6-4 lead. The inning opened with Ashley Wlezen (So., Charlotte, NC) smacking a double to lead off the inning.
After Broncos starting pitcher Olivia Peavey (So., Siler City, NC; 3-1) retired the side in order in the sixth inning, Fayetteville State struck for six more runs after sending nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, with Randolph ripping a two-run triple and LaTonia Gatling (Jr., Suffolk, VA) and April Branch (Sr., Watha, NC) driving in a run apiece.
Gatling and Wlezen each had two hits in game 1 for the Lady Broncos, who travel to play Pfeiffer on Tuesday.
Randolph was 3-for-3 in the second game, which Barton broke open with a 10-run inning in which 16 batters went to the plate. Peavey was 1-for-1 with two RBI in the game while Branch was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
