FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State University softball team scored four runs and rapped out nine hits in the second game of its doubleheader against Benedict on Wednesday. But the Lady Broncos couldn't prevent a sweep. The Tigers edged FSU 7-4 at Seabrook Park.
Rebecca Polaschek (Fayetteville, NC) started in the circle, throwing 3 1/3 innings while surrendering four hits and two earned runs. Spencer Embler (Thomasville, NC) threw 3 2/3 innings and gave up just one earned run.
Embler was one of two FSU players who had more than one hit. Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) also had a pair of hits against Shanessa Rees, who pitched both ends of the doubleheader.
The Lady Broncos (0-7) scored the game's first two runs of the ballgame. In the first inning, Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC), Embler and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (Olivia, NC) recorded back-to-back-to-back one-out singles. Henderson-Holmes' hit brought home Wickham, although Embler was thrown out at third on the play. Henderson-Holmes was picked off second base to end the frame.
The next inning, FSU scored again. Brittany Freeman (Fayetteville, NC) reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC) single. After Reep stole second, Walker singled home Freeman. A double play followed, ending the inning.
Benedict finally cracked the scoreboard in the third inning. The Tigers scored on a two-out single, then loaded the bases. But a screaming liner at Reep was controlled to end the frame.
Unfortunately for FSU, Benedict scored two the next inning to take the lead. After the Lady Broncos went down in order in the fourth, the Tigers tacked on two more in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Lady Broncos scored two times to creep within 5-4. Walker led off the frame with a single to center, then stole second. Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) followed with a bunt single and scored on a Benedict throwing error. Gladden stole second and scored on a long throw by the Tigers' catcher. Daniqua Taylor (Currie, NC) was hit by a pitch and stole second. She eventually reached third but was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and the inning ended without any more damage.
Benedict stranded a leadoff triple in the sixth. In the bottom half of the frame, Freeman advanced to second but couldn't score. The Tigers added two runs in the seventh and FSU couldn't muster more than a two-out single in the bottom half of the frame.
The Lady Broncos are off until March 3, when they play Claflin at Seabrook Park.
