FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State University softball team couldn't earn a win in its season opener at Leonard R. Saunders field on Wednesday. Benedict's Shanessa Rees threw a shutout in the circle and the Tigers scored eight times to come away with an 8-0 win.
The Lady Broncos (0-6) were able to put runners on base. Getting them home proved to be the problem.
After the Tigers scored a first inning run, Alex Wickham (Fayetteville, NC) started off the bottom half of a frame with a double to right field. Unfortunately for the Lady Broncos, a successful rally caught Wickham trying for third. Later in the inning Daniqua Taylor (Currie, NC) was hit by a pitch and stole second base. After Spencer Embler (Thomasville, NC) flied out, Taylor stole third. She was left on base when Sierra Henderson-Holmes (Olivia, NC) struck out.
Taylor finished the game 1-for-1 with a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) started the game in the circle and pitched most of the game. She was able to coax a 1-2-3 inning in the second. In the bottom half, FSU once again got the leadoff hitter on base, this time via a Howard walk. After a fielder's choice error put runners on first and second, Rebekah Reep (Fayetteville, NC) flied out then Amanda Anderson (Hope Mills, NC) sacrificed the runners over. The inning ended on an Erica Rodriguez (Charlotte, NC) fly out.
After Benedict added a run in the third, Taylor recorded a one-out single in the bottom half. She stole second on the next pitch. Embler followed with a single, but Taylor was thrown out at the plate. After Henderson-Holmes walked, the inning ended on a fielder's choice.
The Tigers had their biggest inning in the fourth, scoring five runs to stretch their lead to 7-0. After a scoreless FSU fourth, Benedict plated another on a wild pitch in the fifth.
