RALEIGH, NC – The Fayetteville State softball team fell in both of its contest on Friday to the Seton Hill Griffins and West Virginia State Yellow Jackets during day one of the Shaw Softball Challenge held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Lady Broncos (0-8) dropped their opener to Seton Hill 2-0 before falling in game two to West Virginia State 13-3 in six innings. Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) and Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) combined for five hits in the two contests.
Embler allowed just one earned run (two total) in FSU’s opener against Seton Hill but would suffer the loss as the Lady Broncos recorded just four hits. The Griffins scored both of their runs off Embler in the fifth inning. Locklear, Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC), Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) had one hit each for Fayetteville State.
Christine Henderson earned the win pitching a four-hit complete game shutout while striking out ten batters and walking none. Embler went the distance for the Lady Broncos giving up seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
Fayetteville State allowed two runs in the first two innings against West Virginia State to fall behind 2-0. FSU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third but saw the Yellow Jackets plate two runs in the top of the fifth. The Lady Broncos answered back with two runs of their own in bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-3 game. West Virginia State broke the game open in the sixth with nine runs to go ahead 13-3.
Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) suffered the loss pitching a complete game while surrendering 13 runs (three earned) on 15 hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Sara Pelegreen picked up the win tossing three innings giving up one run on four hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Anna Eggleston received the save throwing three innings of relief allowing two runs on two hits, one walk and no strikeouts.
Embler and Locklear recorded two hits each for Fayetteville State. Kalneisha Drawhorn (So., Rowland, NC) had a team-high two RBI.
The Lady Broncos have three games scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16 highlighted by their conference opener at 11 a.m. against the Virginia Union Panthers. FSU will follow with a 2 p.m. matchup against the Lincoln (PA) Lions and then take on Seton Hill at 5 p.m.
