ORANGEBURG, SC - The rise ball of Brenau pitcher Jenny Shepherd proved to be too good a pitch for the Fayetteville State softball team in the Lady Broncos season opener on Friday. Shepherd no-hit FSU in an 8-0 Brenau win on the campus of South Carolina State.
"We faced a tough pitcher that had speed and lots of movement," Lady Broncos coach Miguel Justiniano said. "In softball that is a deadly combination. She kept our bats silent."
In total, Shepherd struck out 13 batters in what was a five-inning game. She got six runs of support by the end of the third inning and was able to cruise from there.
The Lady Broncos did have one chance with a runner on third and one out in the third, but Shepherd recorded two strikeouts to end the inning. In total, three FSU players reached base. Kyrin Walker and Haley Wood reached after being hit by a pitch. Wood stole second base and later advanced to third before being left on base to close out the third inning. Sierra Holmes got on via a walk.
Rebecca Polaschek started in the circle and pitched four innings with 24 batters faced. Walker faced four batters in the fifth inning.
Spencer Embler manned first base and collected ten putouts. Alex Wickham finished with two from behind the plate at catcher. Rebekah Reep was the starting third baseman and had three assists.
The Lady Broncos committed just one error in the game.
