Orangeburg, SC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team dropped game one (7-0) then won game two (16-14) of a non-conference doubleheader against Claflin University on Saturday, February 4th at Adden Street Field. FSU moves to 1-1 in the overall standings, while the Lady Panthers also the start the season with a 1-1 mark.

The first contest resulted in a three-hit shutout for Claflin. FSU allowed 14 hits and seven runs before yielding in the seventh end (7-0). Senior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC), senior third baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC), and freshman infielder Rachel Rodriguez (Lillington, NC) had the only hits for the Lady Broncos in game one.

In the second contest, Fayetteville State faced a 3-0 deficit after the first inning. The Lady Broncos rebounded with six hits and seven runs at the top of the second inning. Freshman utility Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) and junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) both had 2-RBI singles in the inning.

Claflin scored three runs in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Howard scored an unearned run off a wild pitch to extend the FSU lead to 8-6. The Lady Panthers tied the game (8-8) in the bottom of the third with three hits and two runs.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. Fayetteville State exploded in the sixth inning with seven hits and eight runs, inning a homerun with from junior infielder Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) for a 16-8 advantage. Claflin attempted to close the gap with one run scored in the bottom of the sixth and five runs in the seventh.



The Lady Broncos held onto the victory and Howard earned credit for the win on the mound. She pitched six innings with seven hits allowed and five strikeouts.

Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) had a team-high four RBIs, along with three hits and two runs scored. Lee had team-highs of four hits and three runs scored.

Fayetteville State returns to the diamond for their home opener against St. Andrews University on Wednesday, February 15th. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lamon Street Park.
