FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State softball team opened its 2013 season on Sunday afternoon by dropping a doubleheader against the Concord Mountain Lions (2-0 overall) at Seabrook Park. The Lady Broncos lost by scores of 8-4 and 4-3. Haley Wood (Fr., Spring Hope, NC) recorded three hits and drove in three runs in her first games for Fayetteville State.

Wood led Fayetteville State (0-2 overall) offensively in the season openers going 3-for-7 at the plate with two doubles and one run scored. She had one hit and one RBI in the first game and followed with two hits and two RBI's in the second.

Wood began with a single to left field that drove in Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) and scored after Henderson-Holmes' RBI triple down the right field line.

That would be all of the offense FSU registered until the seventh inning as Concord plated eight unanswered runs. Concord broke the game open with a five-run top of the seventh inning.

Fayetteville State attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but was only able to score two runs. Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) drove in Amanda Anderson (So., Hope Mills, NC) for the first run of the inning and Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) singled home Taylor in the next at-bat.

Embler took the loss pitching after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mountain Lions struck first with one run in the top of the first. Haley Wood answered back for the Lady Broncos with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. Concord added one run each in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead. Fayetteville State tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC). The Mountain Lions scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth and led for the rest of the game.
