CHARLOTTE - The Fayetteville State bowling team went 12-0 and had a total pin count of 9,621 to finish first at the season-opening CIAA Western Divisional Meet at AMF University Lanes Nov. 13-15. The Broncos scored match-highs in team play (948) and baker play (254). Akira Turner led FSU with an average of 199 in the two-day team matches.Turner had four 200+ plus games, including a tournament-high 248. Freshman Jamie Donnelly bowled for a 173.4 average while Jessica Collins, who also bowled a 200 game, registered a 167.3 average. Head coach Bobby Henderson was pleased with his team's play. "Considering that this was the first conference meet, I was somewhat impressed," he said. "But, if they would've bowled like they did in the practice rounds, we would've had four players averaging 180 and above." Henderson, who served on the NCAA selection committee for several years, said his team needs to continue to improve in order to make the NCAA tournament. "Not only do we have to win, but we have to bowl high scores to make the tournament," he said. "With the team we have this year we can be ranked like we have been in the past. We're very talented." This season, the Broncos (17-5, 12-0 CIAA) are 5-5 against NCAA Division I schools. According to Henderson, that needs to improve. "I don't think we'll have problems performing in conference play," he said. "But, we need to do well in these outside tournaments, because that's what the committee looks at." Johnson C. Smith placed second, finishing with a total pin count of 8,243.
