March 22, 2010

DURHAM, NC - The Fayetteville State bowling team topped St. Paul's and Virginia State 4-2, before falling in the CIAA semifinals, 4-1-1, to Elizabeth City State. FSU lost the first game 231-217, before the teams tied at 225 in the second game.

The Broncos lost the third game 181-156, won the fourth game 181-180 before dropping the final two games 161-156 and 222-167.

In the final game, ECSU hit six strikes.

For the tournament, FSU bowled 200 or more 13 times as a team.

FSU head coach Bobby Henderson, the CIAA's Coach of the Year, said he told his team not to hold its head following the loss.

"Some of our girls were in tears," said Henderson.. "Despite what happened, this is the most successful season FSU has ever had."

"It took some teams to bowl monumental games against us," he continued. "There were a few games that we let get away, but that's how the ball rolls sometimes."

Akira Turner and Jessica Styers were named to the All-Tournament team.

"I'm very proud of what we did," Henderson said. "We would've loved to win it, we're disappointed but I'm proud of my team."

Henderson said FSU making the NCAA tournament was likely a "long shot."

The Broncos return their entire team minus Styers.

"We're not in bad shape heading to next season," said Henderson. "But, still, I commend them on everything."
