Savannah Starling earned CIAA All-Tournament Team honors with a 195 average in five games, including an individual-high of 246

Chesapeake, VA - The Fayetteville State University women's bowling team fell 4-2 to Bowie State University in the championship round of the 2017 CIAA Bowling Championship held March 26th at the AMF Western Branch Lanes. FSU concludes the season with an overall record 66-11.

The final day of CIAA bowling competition began with Round Two of the double-elimination, championship bracket. Top seeded Fayetteville State defeated No. 4 Virginia Union University 4-1 to continue their journey in the winner bracket. The No. 3 Bulldogs of Bowie State slid by the No. 2 Virginia State University, but were knocked into the loser's bracket after 4-1 loss to the Lady Broncos.

In the lower bracket, Saint Augustine's and Johnson C. Smith advanced with victories over Chowan and Shaw, respectively. The Hawks and Lady Bears were eliminated from the championship after the second round of competition. No. 8 Saint Augustine's ended their run after a 4-0 loss to Virginia Union. Virginia State eliminated Johnson C. Smith with a 4-0 sweep.

Bowie State and Virginia State met again in the lower bracket. BSU won 166-134 in the first game, VSU retaliated with a big 215-133 victory in the second. The Bulldogs proceeded to win games three, four, and six to advance to the championship finals for the second meeting with Fayetteville State.

FSU appeared off-balance after sitting two rounds awaiting their opponent. Bowie State won the first three games before splitting the fourth with a tie. The Lady Broncos gained their bearings and marked their first victory of the set, 159-135.  However, BSU finished the job with a secure 170-157 victory.

To fulfill the double-elimination bracket, Fayetteville State and the Lady Bulldogs went in to an eighth round. The teams traded victories in the first three games, giving Bowie State a 2-1 advantage.  In the fourth game, BSU marked a huge 208-134 victory.

The defending CIAA Champions only needed one more victory to seal the deal, but was barely held off 157-156 by Fayetteville State. BSU claimed the 2017 CIAA Women's Bowling Championship title with a 168-107 win in the sixth and final round. The conference title is the Lady Bulldogs' third straight and seventh in school history.



Junior Devondra Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC), sophomore Veronica Colon-Santiago (Hope Mills, NC) and freshman Savannah Starling (Fayetteville, NC) earned three of the five CIAA All-Tournament Team spots. Starling averaged 195 in five games during the team matches, including an individual-high of 246. Bazemore had a tournament average of 193, including games of 202 and 201. Colon-Santiago bowled in four games with a 188 average.
