Crystal Mujica Led All FSU Bowlers With A 185.89 Average This Weekend

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s bowling team captured the CIAA Southern Division Championship on Sunday afternoon after finishing the Southern Divisional Meet III with a 4-1 record in Baker matches. The Lady Broncos have now won ten straight divisional titles and 12 in the last 13 seasons; and will represent the Southern Division as the No. 1 seed in next week’s CIAA Bowling Championship in Durham. Crystal Mujica (So., Fayetteville, NC) led all FSU bowlers with a 185.89 average during the three-day event.
Fayetteville State began the final day of competition reeling off four straight victories before falling in its final match to Saint Augustine’s. FSU won the CIAA Southern Division after defeating Johnson C. Smith in its fourth match of the day and Saint Augustine’s lost to Winston-Salem State 628-588. The Lady Broncos finished the weekend with a division-best 13-2 overall record and tallied 12,203 total pins; including 8,625 in match play and 3,578 in Baker matches.
FSU opened with back-to-back victories over Shaw and Winston-Salem State by less than 100 pins each. Fayetteville State defeated Shaw 598-535 and Winston-Salem State 790-708. The Lady Broncos followed with comfortable wins over Livingstone (751-489) and Johnson C. Smith (765-494). Fayetteville State ended the day with a 727-674 defeat to Saint Augustine’s.
Mujica finished the event fifth individually in scoring average after bowling a total of ten matches. Kiara Reid (Sr., Rocky Mount, NC) was the second-highest bowler for FSU with a 175 average and was followed by Megan Maynor (So., Fayetteville, NC) with a 170.20. De’Andrea Bethea (Jr., Raleigh, NC) recorded a 168.78 average while Ashley Cooper (Fr., Rocky Mount, NC) contributed a 166.44. Yanais Fischer (Fr., Havana, Cuba) and Renee Guischard (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) bowled two matches each for FSU; Fischer finished with a 190.50 average and Guischard a 138.50.
Elizabeth City State recorded the best record among CIAA Northern Division teams with a 13-2 mark. Bowie State finished with a tournament-best 12,642 total pins highlighted by 8,935 in match play. Shayla Lightfoot of Bowie State led all bowlers with a 210.10 average and Nicole Sciortino from Saint Augustine’s was second with a 209.90.
The 2013 CIAA Bowling Championship will be held Mar. 23-25 at the AMF Durham Lanes in Durham, NC.
