FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The defending CIAA Champions may only be getting better.
Fayetteville State (56-13, 45-4) was never threatened in five matches to kick off the last of three CIAA Southern Division events, romping to a 5-0 mark at B&B Bowling Lanes on Friday.
Led De'Andrea Bethea's (So., Raleigh, N.C.) 205.6 average, the Lady Broncos won all five matches with relative ease, the closest being a 907-820 victory against St. Augustine's. Fayetteville State totaled more than 900 pins in four of the five matches - just missing that mark in an 897-760 win over Livingstone to start the meet's action.
Crystal Mujica (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) was also brilliant, rolling a 199.6 average. Kiara Reid (Jr., Rocky Mount, N.C.), the Southern Dvision's Bowler of the Month in February, was next at 192.0 while Daisy Weishman (Jr., Fayetteville, N.C.) added a 184.3 average. Kelly Wakerhauser (Sr., Portage, Wis.) added a 163.0 average and Megan Maynor (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) rolled an average of 162.25.
Fayetteville State also won matches against Shaw (963-603), Johnson C. Smith (932-574) and Winston-Salem State (949-741).
St. Augustine's was 4-1 on the day while Winston-Salem State was 3-2 and Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone and Shaw were each 1-4.
The event resumes with five more matches on Saturday and then Baker matches on Sunday. The Lady Broncos will try to defend their championship at the CIAA Championships in Durham, N.C., next week.
