HAMPTON, VA - Fayetteville State forward Shuanda Ashford has been named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Newcomer of the Week for her performance in the Lady Broncos' 78-71 loss against Mount Olive College. Ashford earns her first weekly honor of the season from the league.
Ashford is a senior from Fayetteville, who showcased her high school career at E.E. Smith. She tallied her third double-double of the season against the Trojans with 11 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-8 (63%) shooting from the field. Shuanda, affectionately known as "Shaq", has now recorded two double-doubles in her last three games. Ashford shot 60% or better overall for the fifth time this season.
The 6-1 transfer from East Carolina University is second in scoring this season at 12.0 points per game and has grabbed a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game. She averages 23 minutes per contest and is shooting 53% (50-of-95) from the floor.
The Lady Broncos will travel to Murfreesboro, NC on January 3rd for its first conference game against Chowan University. Fayetteville State will host its first CIAA game on January 10th when Lincoln (P.a.) visits Capel Arena. Both games will begin at 5:30 pm.
