FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday afternoon as it takes on the Mount Olive Trojans at 2 p.m. The Lady Broncos is currently riding a six-game winning streak that stretches back into the month of November.
Fayetteville State enters the contest with an 8-1 overall record, while the Trojans are 7-1 on the season. The Sunday afternoon matchup is the final non-conference game of the season for the Lady Broncos. FSU was 2-0 at the Shaw University Invitational; in which it defeated No. 17 (USA TODAY Sports DII Top 25 Coaches’ Poll) Nova Southeastern and Washington Adventist.
The Lady Broncos are led on offense by the senior duo of Kristen Hanzer and Shuanda Ashford. Hanzer, a guard from Youngsville, NC, is leading the team in scoring with 20.3 points per game. Ashford, a forward/center from Fayetteville, adds 12.1 points per game and a team-high 7.4 rebounds.
Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) contributes 10.0 points per game and leads the team with 3.8 assists per game. Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) averages 7.3 rebounds per game and has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in three of her last four games. Fayetteville State scores 78.2 points per game and is holding opponents to 60.1 points per contest.
Mount Olive’s offense is led by Tamara Nesmith with 16.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Three players are averaging double-digit points per game. Joneiqua Gary is posting 14.2 points per contest while Kirksten Mitchell adds 14.1. The Trojans are averaging 72.6 points per game this season and hold opponents to just 51.6.
The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series over Mount Olive 5-1 dating back to the 1990-91 campaign. Fayetteville State won the first five meetings in the series before falling in the last contest 57-54 in Fayetteville on Dec. 19, 2011. FSU holds a 3-0 advantage in games played at Mount Olive, including a 81-58 victory on Nov. 27, 2000.
