Eric Tucker - CIAA Coach of the Week (12/21/08)

Dec. 22, 2008

Fayetteville, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) honored the Lady Broncos Head Basketball Coach Eric Tucker as the Coach of the Week and junior point guard Danielle Russell as the Player of the Week. As the first honors of the season, Coach Tucker and the Lady Broncos finished the week with a 2-1 record. FSU fell to the University of the District of Columbia in overtime 71-69 on Sunday, December 14. After packing their bags for the warmer climates of Nassau Bahamas, the Lady Broncos defeated the University of Charleston (WV) 78-74 and the highly ranked California (PA) 63-61.

Tucker had a tremendous task of preparing his team for an experience of their lifetime. Many of his student-athletes had never flown and/or been outside of the United States. The team faced two tough opponents and defeated them by close margins.

Danielle Russell - CIAA Player of the Week (12/21/08)

Danielle Russell, a 5-4 junior point guard from Wilmington, NC, was honored the CIAA as the women's player of the week. Russell (who graduated from Ashley High School) transferred to Fayetteville State University from Clinton Junior College and majors in Business Administration. Russell delivered the game-winning basket against California (PA) as time expired for the Bahamas Shootout DII Championship Title. She finished the game with 12 points. In the previous victory over Charleston (WV), Russell took over the game in the second half by scoring 17 of her season-high 21 points. Danielle scored 18 points in the overtime loss to UDC and missed what could have been the tying score that would send the game into a second overtime. For the week, Russell scored 51 points in three games with seven assists and eight steals.

The Lady Broncos will be back in action on January 3, 2009 as they play host to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. The double-header will kick off at 5:30 pm.
