HAMPTON, VA – Fayetteville State guard Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) and Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath have been honored by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their performances last week on the hardwood. Hanzer was recognized as the CIAA Newcomer of the Week while Patterson-Heath received CIAA Coach of the Week honors.
Kristen Hanzer is currently ranked 14th amongst the NCAA Division II in points per game with average of 20.3. She tallied double-digit points in all three games for Fayetteville State and finished shy of a quadruple-double in the 90-46 victory over Salem International. She scored a team-high 21 points and added seven rebounds, eight assists and nine steals in 24 minutes of action. Hanzer followed that performance with 17 points and three steals in a 79-69 win over Nova Southeastern and recorded a game-high 15 points in a win over Washington Adventist. She finished the week 21-of-34 (62%) shooting and added 14 steals, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
Coach Patterson-Heath guided Fayetteville State to a 2-0 mark last weekend in the Shaw University Invitational. One of those victories came against 17th ranked (USA TODAY Sports DII Top 25 Coaches’ Poll) Nova Southeastern; in which FSU shot a season-best 67% from the field.
The Lady Broncos held an opponent to its lowest point total of the season in a 68-35 victory over Washington Adventist. Fayetteville State is currently 8-1 on the season and has won their last six games dating back to Nov. 20. FSU averaged 79 points per game last week and held opponents to 50. The Lady Broncos forced its opponents into 87 turnovers including a season-high 44 against Salem International.
The Newcomer of the Week honor is Hanzer’s second of the season and fourth overall conference award. Patterson-Heath has now been named CIAA Coach of the Week twice.
