FSU Women's Basketball Looking Forward to Rematch Against Chowan

The Fayetteville State women's basketball team will have its rematch against the Hawks of Chowan University (9-1 overall), Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Felton J. Capel Arena. The Broncos (5-3 overall) tip-off in the second game of its doubleheader CIAA opener.

Chowan walked away with a 73-55 win over the Broncos during FSU's Thanksgiving Classic. The Broncos will have to play with intensity, focus, and strategy to be able to be victorious over the Hawks.

Both teams are shooting equally in field goals at 39%. An edge for the Broncos will be the ability to take care of business on the free throw line, averaging 70% for the season over Chowan's 59%.

FSU has created an intensive presence on defense against opponents. During the last meeting with Chowan, the Broncos converted 16 points off turnovers while the Hawks was only afforded half that amount.

Jamesha Mosley (Oak Grove, KY) collected 11 points and four (4) rebounds during her last game against Chowan. The senior forward is averaging 13 points per game, six (6) rebounds, and shooting 52% from the field.

Shantel Bennett (Durham, NC), a sophomore guard, also scored 11 points in the matchup against the Hawks. Bennett averages 11 points per game, her shots are falling at 57% from the field, 50% from behind the arc, and 84% from the free throw line.



Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) helped the team with eight (8) points off the bench. The preseason All-CIAA player has transitioned nicely from coming off the bench to starting for the Broncos, with eight (8) points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She leads the Broncos in assists (2.6), steals (1.6), and blocks (1.9.

FSU will need to defend Chowan's Dhyamond Crenshaw and Danielle Weldon. The last time these teams met, both combined for 33 of Chowan's points. Crenshaw hit 18 and is now averaging 19.1 points per game. Weldon scored 15 and has an average of ten (10) points. Chantel Roberts and Mariah Coker combined for 22 points. Roberts averages 16.4 points and Coker has 12.5 per game.

The Broncos combined for 23 bench points. Chowan's combined bench points are slightly less at 19 points.  

Fayetteville State defeated Morris College (81-40) in its last game on November 30th while Chowan recently beat Shaw 82-70 in its conference opener on December 12th.
