WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RETURNS TO ACTION ON TUESDAY NIGHT AGAINST SALEM INTERNATIONAL

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team will hit the basketball court for the first time in 13 days on Tuesday evening with a 5:30 p.m. home contest against the Salem International Lady Fighting Tigers. The Lady Broncos will then travel to take on Nova Southeastern and Washington Adventist this weekend in the Shaw Classic.

Fayetteville State is currently riding a three-game winning streak and is off to its best start under fourth-year head coach Eva Patterson-Heath. The Lady Broncos are 5-1 on the season, while the Lady Fighting Tigers enter with a 1-6 record with their lone victory coming against WVU Parkersburg. Salem International plays in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Tuesday night will mark the fourth all-time meeting with Fayetteville State holding a 2-1 series lead. FSU won the last meeting 71-51 on Dec. 15, 2011 at Salem. The Lady Broncos were victorious in the first all-time meeting 76-60 in 1998, while the Lady Fighting Tigers won 71-66 in 1999.

Fayetteville State has two players currently scoring in double-figures led by Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) at 21.8 points per game. Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is averaging 12.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 per contest. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) is dishing out a team-best 4.0 assists per game. The Lady Broncos are scoring 77.8 points per game, second-best in the CIAA, and are holding opponents to 65.2 points per game. FSU is shooting 46% from the field as a team, 27% behind the three-point arc and 65% at the free-throw line.

Salem International’s offense is led by Whitney McCargo as she averages 9.3 points per game. She has played in all seven games this season with six starts and is shooting 41% (24-of-58) from the field. Shakinah Haggins leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 per game. The Lady Fighting Tigers are scoring 52.9 points per game while opponents are averaging 66.4 points per contest. As a team, Salem International is shooting 33% from the field, 17% behind the three-point line and 60% at the free-throw line.

MANNING SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH 25 REBOUNDS IN FSU WIN
Fayetteville State center SheQuitia Manning has etched her name into the Fayetteville State record books. Manning, the Lady Broncos' 6-foot-2 senior, set a career-high for rebounds by the 8-minute mark of the first half. She wasn't done. Manning finished with a school-record 25 rebounds to go with 12 points as Fayetteville State won for the second time on its West Virginia road trip after a comfortable 71-51 victory over Salem International on Thursday night at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
