FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team returns to Felton J. Capel Arena on Tuesday evening for a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Virginia-Lynchburg Lady Dragons. The Lady Broncos have played their last two games on the road, and will take the next 13 days off after Tuesday. FSU is currently riding a two-game winning streak with wins on the road against Paine and West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Lady Broncos are off to their best start under head coach Eva Patterson-Heath with a 4-1 record. The Lady Dragons enter the contest with a 2-4 overall record. Virginia-Lynchburg started the season 2-0 with wins over Lenoir Community College and Chowan, but has dropped its last four games including a 65-50 home loss to Elizabeth City State on Nov. 20.
Fayetteville State is led on offense by Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) and Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC). Hanzer is averaging a team-high 21.8 points per game on 41-of-74 (55%) shooting from the field. She has started in all five games this season and is logging 29.2 minutes of playing time per game. Ashford averages 14.2 points per game and is grabbing a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) is averaging just a shade under double-digits at 9.0 points per game and has dished out a team-high 4.4 assists per game.
The Lady Broncos are scoring an average of 81.4 points per game and is shooting 49% from the field as a team. FSU’s defense is forcing its opponents into an average of 28 turnovers per game and posts 18 steals per contest. The Lady Dragons average 58.5 points per game and has a team shooting percentage of 35.1.
Fayetteville State will be facing Virginia-Lynchburg for the first time in Patterson-Heath’s four years as head coach.
