FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team will hit the road for back-to-back games this week as it travels to face the Paine College Lady Lions at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. The Lady Broncos stay on the road for their next contest Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against West Virginia Wesleyan.

Fayetteville State is coming off its first loss of the 2012-13 season last Saturday with a last-second 72-70 loss to the UNC Pembroke Braves in Fayetteville. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) was the only Lady Bronco to score in double-digits against UNC Pembroke as she scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting. FSU had three players record nine points each in Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC), Bria Robinson (So., Belmont, NC) and Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC). Ashford also finished with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals (tied with Robinson).

Hanzer leads the Lady Broncos in scoring at 25.7 points per game and is followed by Ashford at 13.0 points per game. Ashford also leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 boards per game. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) has dished out a team-high 5.0 assists per game this season.

Fayetteville State is averaging 83.3 points per game while opponents are scoring 72.3 points per contest. FSU is shooting 49% as a team while its defense has been a staple forcing 91 turnovers in three games.

Paine will face its fourth straight CIAA opponent to open the season and currently posts a 1-2 record. The Lions’ lone win of the season came against in a 64-40 victory on Nov. 17 against Johnson C. Smith. Paine also dropped contests to Virginia State and Elizabeth City State. RESPER, LADY BRONCOS USE LATE RUN TO PUT AWAY PAINE
Winless and overmatched, somehow the Paine Lady Lions continued to hang around. Brittany Pevey hit a jumper, bringing Paine within five points at 55-50 with just over 8 minutes to go, threatening to put a damper on Fayetteville State's hot start to the women's basketball season. But then Akysia Resper, who's proving to hold a reputation for hitting big shots already this season, buried a 3-pointer, and the Lady Broncos were finally off and running - for good this time.
