FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team will travel to face the Catawba College Indians on Tuesday evening in a 7 p.m. contest at Goodman Gymnasium. This will be the first road game of the 2012-13 season for the Lady Broncos after opening their season on Nov. 9 with a 90-57 victory over the Barber-Scotia Sabers at Felton J. Capel Arena.
Fayetteville State’s 90 points scored are the most in a contest since recording 87 against Coker in Fayetteville on Nov. 19, 2011. It shot 56.9% from the field as a team and had 46 rebounds to Barber-Scotia’s 37. The Lady Bronco defense held Barber-Scotia to just 32.3% shooting in the contest and forced the Sabers into 31 turnovers that led to 31 points.
Guard Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC), recently named the CIAA Player of the Week, scored a game-high 18 points in her first game at Fayetteville State. She shot 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 at the free-throw line. Hanzer also recorded six rebounds, two assists, one block and four steals in 19 minutes against the Sabers. She was one of three players with 10 or more points in the contest as Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) had 12 points and seven assists, and Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) had 10. Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC), also making her debut for FSU, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Catawba will be opening its 2012-13 season against the Lady Broncos after finishing last year 19-11 overall and 12-6 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Indians are led by eighth-year head coach Angie Morton, who has compiled a 111-89 mark during her tenure at Catawba and led the team to a SAC Tournament Title during her first season.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 as it hosts the UNC Pembroke Braves at 2 p.m.
