FAYETTEVILLE - With its season opener looming in only six days, the Fayetteville State women's basketball team took a break on Thursday.

The Broncos invited fans and FSU supporters to the "Super Subs Meet and Greet" sponsored by Jersey Mike's.

Despite the inclement weather lots of fans turned out to mingle with the reigning CIAA Western Division champions and first-year head coach Eva Patterson-Heath.

Warren Dobbins, a 1963 FSU graduate and member of the FSU Athletic Club, said the meet and greet was a great event.

"I thought it was very entertaining and informational," he said. "We have a chance to have a close up look at the players and meet the coaches. I can't wait for basketball to get on the way."

Each member of the Broncos introduced themselves and told supporters what they could expect from them on the court.

Junior forward LaPorsche Hokett, the most vocal of the Broncos, promised intensity, energy and a chance at the CIAA Championship.

"These types of events are important, not only to showcase our athletes athletic ability, but also to show their eloquence," assistant coach Gilbert Abraham said. "We're excited to kickoff the year with an event like this that really accentuates the ability of our girls outside of the court."

FSU returns 11 letter winners and four starters from last season's 19-9 squad. Erica Gilley and L'Oreal Price were selected to the ALL-CIAA Preseason in October.

"I'm glad a lot of people came out and interacted with us and heard what we have to say about this upcoming season, said Price. "I think if we continue to work hard and play good on defense the season could have a good result."

Monica Greene and Tiayna Bennett, both seniors at FSU, said the meet and greet was a success.

"I thought it was nice and very well put together," Bennett said. "I enjoyed the ladies and their speeches."

Added Greene: "It was good to finally get to know them. I'm expecting them to win this year. They did good last year, but they have to keep it up."

FSU opens the season on Wednesday, when it travels to Florence, S.C. to face Francis Marion. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
