FAYETTEVILLE STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS 2016-17 SEASON IN CIAA-PSAC CHALLENGE

Fayetteville, NC -- The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team will open their 2016-17 season on the road in the CIAA-PSAC Challenge hosted by Johnson C. Smith University on Friday, Nov. 11th through Saturday, Nov. 12th at Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte, NC.

On the opening day (November 11th), the Lady Broncos will face Seton Hill at 2:00 p.m. Following the contest, JCSU will represent the CIAA in a cross conference matchup versus Slippery Rock University at 4:00 p.m.

Three-point Shooting Lifts Seton Hill Past Lady Broncos 73-64
Erie, PA - Seton Hill (23-7 overall) will advance to the next round of the NCAA DII Atlantic Region Tournament after defeating Fayetteville State 73-64. The Griffins made 14 of 28 three-pointers to stay ahead of the Broncos comeback efforts. L'oreal Price led FSU (20-10 overall) with 16 points while Tiffany Haywood followed with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Deja Middleton also finished in double figures with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Seton Hill led at intermission 35-33.

FSU women's basketball has been predicted to finish sixth overall and third in the CIAA Southern Division race. The Lady Broncos concluded the 2015-16 season with a record of 15-13 overall and 9-7 in the CIAA.

Fayetteville State has five student-athletes from last season returning to the roster, including preseason All-CIAA selection Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC). Best played in all 28 games and started 22 her junior year. She averaged 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds during the 2015-16 season. She earned CIAA Newcomer of the Week honors on four occasions en route to being selected to the All-CIAA Team.

In addition to Best, senior guard Emerald Smith (Durham, NC), sophomore center Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, NC), sophomore forward Kara Straite (Greensboro, NC), and sophomore Kayla Phifer (Greensboro, NC) will be the experienced core.

The second and final day of the challenge (November 12th), Fayetteville State will clash with Slippery Rock University at 12:00 p.m. JCSU and Seton Hill will tip-off afterwards at 2:00 p.m.


 

 

There are nine newcomers, including four freshmen. Juniors Asia Potts (Rock Hill, SC), Kyera Coleman (Pflugerville, TX), Tiashana Morris (Virginia Beach, VA), and Breona Jones (Henderson, NC) will add depth and experience, despite being first time Lady Broncos. Jones earned the CIAA Rookie of the Year Award her freshman season at Elizabeth City State.

Sophomore forward Yakima Clifton (Durham, NC) comes to Fayetteville State from Presbyterian College. Clifton played in 30 of 31 games during the 2015-16 season with the Blue Hose, averaging 9.5 minutes per game.

The foursome freshmen bunch of guards Tajah Clark (Clayton, NC), Miranda Hinton (Clayton, NC), Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) and forward Kayla Robinson (Winston-Salem, NC) round out the FSU roster. Clark redshirted last season at Fayetteville State.

Following the CIAA-PSAC Challenge, the Lady Broncos will come home for their home season opener against UNC Pembroke on Thursday, November 17th. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena.
