FAYETTEVILLE - Nearly a month after claiming its third Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship, the Fayetteville State women's basketball team is still receiving accolades, recognition and awards. On Monday, Fayetteville Mayor Anthony G. Chavonne gave a formal congratulation to the Broncos during a city council meeting. Chavonne read a proclamation on behalf of the council that cited FSU's 20-10 record, its sixth NCAA Division II tournament appearance and its third CIAA title. The proclamation said the Broncos were "an outstanding representation of the winning spirit of the esteemed Fayetteville State University and the city of Fayetteville." The entire FSU team, Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath and her coaching staff, Chancellor Dr. James Anderson, Athletic Director Dr. Edward McLean and Associate Athletic Director Anthony Bennett were on hand, representing the Broncos. "It's been quick and fast since the CIAA title," said Patterson-Heath. "It's been good for the young ladies and I think they are still on cloud nine." "The players might not understand how big of a deal being honored by the city council and mayor is," she said. "If they don't know now, they'll know later." FSU topped Bowie State 66-50 in the CIAA Championship game on Feb. 27 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
