Fayetteville State University senior, guard Shayla Roberts has been selected by ALLTEL as one of the nine winners for their Words of Wisdom: Lessons in Courage Essay Contest.

The "Words of Wisdom" essay contest was opened to current and prospective students of America's black colleges and universities. Each student had to write a 600-800 word essay telling how they personified courage and spirit in today's environment. The nine winners were chosen from the essays submitted and each winning essayist will personally receive a $5,000 scholarship for the participating school general scholarship fund.

The nine winners will be honored at an awards banquet to be held Friday, April 6, 2007 in Little Rock, Arkansas. "Words of Wisdom" spokesperson and esteemed poet and author, Dr. Maya Angelou will personally present each winner with the scholarship prize.

A native of Swainsboro, Georgia, Shayla was recently named the State of Georgia's Peach of an Athlete.
