CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The time has arrived.
The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos will begin their 2012 CIAA Tournament as the Southern Division's No. 4 seed, facing off against the Northern Division's fifth seed, Chowan, at 3 p.m. on the tournament's opening day at Time Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday.
Fayetteville State (12-14, 5-11, 4-6) lost to Chowan (10-16, 5-11, 3-7) 66-54 on Jan. 7 in Fayetteville.
Should the Lady Broncos win, they will face Northern Division champion Virginia Union (12-13, 9-7, 7-3), which downed Fayetteville State 70-53 on Jan. 19 in Richmond, Va.
The Broncos' men's team will open play on the tournament's second day, Wednesday, at 9 p.m.
Fayetteville State (9-16, 6-10, 4-6), the Southern Division's No. 4 seed, will play the winner of Tuesday's opening round game between South No. 6 St. Augustine's (13-13, 8-8, 3-7) and North No. 5 Lincoln (PA) (11-17, 6-10, 4-6).
The Broncos split their regular season series with St. Augustine's, falling 62-59 in Fayetteville on Feb. 4 before cruising past the Falcons 72-60 on Feb. 13 in Raleigh. Fayetteville State lost its only meeting with Lincoln, falling 78-75 in overtime on Jan. 12 on the road.
Should the Broncos win, they would face fifth-ranked and league unbeaten Shaw (24-2, 16-0, 10-0). Fayetteville State was one of the Bears' toughest foes this season. The Broncos lost 92-84 in double overtime at Shaw on Jan. 30 before stumbling 86-74 on Feb. 18 in Fayetteville.
