FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The 25th-ranked Fayetteville State women’s basketball team entertains the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls on Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. contest at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos are coming off their third consecutive victory with an 81-68 win over Saint Augustine’s in a contest between two of the top teams in the CIAA Southern Division. Fayetteville State is currently tied for first in the divisional standings.
Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State enters the weekend showdown with an 18-3 overall record and 10-1 conference mark. The Lady Broncos are currently tied for first in the Southern Division standings with a 4-1 record. FSU is tied with Shaw and Elizabeth City State for most overall wins and conference victories this season.|
The Lady Broncos rank in the top 25 nationally in scoring offense averaging 73.0 points per game. That point total also puts FSU second in the conference. Fayetteville State also has the league’s sixth-best defense allowing 60.9 points per game.
In conference games only, Fayetteville State is second in scoring offense and fifth in scoring defense.
Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) leads both the conference and team in scoring with an 18.8 points per game clip. Hanzer also ranks in the top 25 nationally in scoring offense. The UNC Wilmington transfer is also making her mark at other places on the floor. She is fifth in the conference in field-goal percentage (47.6) and 10th in rebounding at 6.8 per game. Hanzer is second on the team in assists dishing out 3.3 per game.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is second on the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game and rebounding at 7.0 per contest. The reigning CIAA Newcomer of the Week tied a career-high of 24 points while grabbing a career-best 12 rebounds in the victory over Saint Augustine’s. She is fourth in the conference in shooting percentage (53.4) and eighth in rebounding.
Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) is the other Lady Bronco averaging in double figures this season. Resper averages 10.7 points per game and leads the team in assists at 3.8 per contest. She also leads the conference in total assists at 80.
Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) leads FSU in rebounding at 7.9 per game while contributing 7.0 points per contest. Coleman leads the league in shooting percentage at 62.4 percent and ranks fourth in total rebounds with 165.
The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 574-395 and 327-240 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Saint Augustine’s Recap
Ashford and Hanzer combined for more than half of the points scored for Fayetteville State in an 81-68 victory over Saint Augustine’s.
Ashford had a stellar game with a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds. The majority of her points came in the second half with 5-of-10 shooting and a 5-of-5 performance at the free throw line. Hanzer recorded her seventh game with 20 or more points with a 23-point day. She led the first half with 10 points and chipped in 13 to complete her effort.
Britney Whitehead (Jr., Enfield, NC) also finished in double-figures with ten points.
FSU made 78.8% of its free throws with a 26-of-33 showing. The Lady Broncos also had the better performance in the post position with 38 points scored in the paint. Thirty of the 38 were in the second half compared to the Falcons 12.
Second chance opportunities were limited in the second half for St. Augustine's. FSU grabbed 31 rebounds; where 14 of them were from the defensive end. Seventeen offensive rebounds were put-back for 19 points. SAU had eight offensive rebounds, which led to nine points, and eight defensive.
The Fayetteville State defense forced 32 Saint Augustine's turnovers and converted them into 33 points.
Johnson C. Smith Scouting Report
Johnson C. Smith enters the contest with a 7-13 overall record and 4-7 conference mark. The Lady Golden Bulls are fourth in the division standings with a 2-3 record.
JCSU is led by first-year Head Coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. He owns a 7-13 overall record with the Lady Golden Bulls and 42-34 record in four years as a head coach.
Brittany Dorsett leads the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game and is one of two players to average in double figures. Karnina Bunch contributes 10.8 points per contest.
Johnson C. Smith ranks 10th in the conference in scoring offense (55.2) and fifth in scoring defense (59.9). In games against conference opponents, the Lady Golden Bulls are sixth in scoring offense and seventh in scoring defense.
