FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team will take on the Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a CIAA Southern Division contest. The Lady Broncos will host "Ball in Pink", a Play 4 Kay event, on Saturday afternoon. FSU is coming off its biggest win of the 2012-13 season on Wednesday with a 66-64 victory against the ninth-ranked Shaw Bears in Raleigh.
Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State picked up a huge CIAA road victory on Wednesday evening over the ninth-ranked Shaw Bears, 66-64, at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Lady Broncos were victorious over their second opponent this season ranked in the top 25 nationally. FSU has defeated both ranked opponents at Shaw’s home court. Fayetteville State was victorious earlier this season over the then-ranked No. 17 Nova Southeastern Sharks during the Shaw University Invitational.
FSU enters the weekend showdown against Saint Augustine’s with a 17-3 overall record and is tied with Elizabeth City State at a conference-best 9-1 record. The Lady Broncos are tied for first place in the CIAA Southern Division standings with Saint Augustine’s and Shaw at 3-1.
Fayetteville State currently has three players averaging in double figures this season led by Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) at 18.5 points per game. She is second in the conference behind Virginia Union’s Ashle Freeman in scoring while ranking fourth in shooting at 48.2 percent.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding. The transfer from East Carolina is averaging 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. She currently ranks third in the conference in shooting ahead of Hanzer at 53.1 percent.
Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) has seen her average increase over the last few games and now averages 11.0 points per game. The guard has scored 10 or more points in five straight contests including 18 twice against Livingstone and Shaw. She is dishing out a team-best 3.8 assists per game and leads the league in total assists at 75.
Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) leads the Lady Broncos in rebounding at 8.0 per game. She ranks third in the conference in total rebounds at 159.
Fayetteville State ranks second in the league in scoring offense (72.6) and sixth in scoring defense. In conference games only, FSU is third in scoring offense and fourth in scoring defense.
The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 573-395 and 326-240 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Resper's layup with 13 seconds remaining lifted Fayetteville State to a 66-64 victory over 9th-ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Shaw Lady Bears on Wednesday night.
The Lady Broncos earned their second victory of the season over an opponent ranked in the top 25 nationally.
Resper was one of three players to finish the game in double-figures as she tallied 18 points highlighted by a 9-of-12 night at the free-throw line. The nine successful free throws by Resper were part of an impressive effort by Fayetteville State at the charity stripe.
The Lady Broncos finished 23-of-28 (82.1%) while the Lady Bears were just 8-of-13 (61.5%). FSU, at one point, made 17 straight free-throws expanding from the first half into the second.
Hanzer recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) scored 10 points.
Saint Augustine’s Scouting Report
Saint Augustine’s comes to Fayetteville with a 10-9 overall record and 6-4 mark in conference play. The Lady Falcons are tied for first in divisional play with a 3-1 record.
SAU is under the direction of third-year head coach Rachel Bullard. Bullard is 43-34 during her tenure with the Lady Falcons and overall as a head coach.
Regime McCombs leads the Saint Augustine’s offense in scoring at 12.8 points per game and is one of two players to average in double figures. Porscha Walton is second on the team in scoring at 10.6 points per contest.
The Lady Falcons are fourth in the conference in scoring offense (69.6) and 11th in scoring defense (68.8). In games against conference opponents, SAU is second in scoring offense and 10th in scoring defense.
All-Time Series With Saint Augustine’s
The contest will be the 70th all-time between Fayetteville State and Saint Augustine’s dating back to the 1950 season.
The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series over the Lady Falcons 41-28.
The teams split two games last season with Fayetteville State winning the first game 64-62 in Fayetteville before Saint Augustine’s won the second contest 58-55 in Raleigh.
Fayetteville State will have the next six days off before hosting the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
