FSU-Lady Falcons Game Notes
RALEIGH, NC - If things go according to plan for the Fayetteville State women's basketball team on Saturday, it'll mean even Mother Nature can't cool off the Lady Broncos right now. FSU has won four games in a row, twice by double-digits, and aims for a fifth consecutive win when it takes on St. Augustine's at 2 pm.
Audio from the game will be streamed live, at FSUBroncos.com/allaccess. WAUG-TV will televise the basketball doubleheader on Time Warner Cable 168 in Raleigh, N.C.
FSU (14-4 overall, 7-2 CIAA, 3-0 Southern Division) trailed early, once again, in its contest against Winston-Salem State last Saturday. The Lady Broncos rallied to take the lead before halftime then built a lead into double-digits after the break.
Winston-Salem State made a run at FSU after that, but couldn't quite claw back to even. A last-second 3-point attempt clanged off the rim, allowing the Lady Broncos to hang onto a 62-59 win.
Deja Middleton (Richmond, VA) picked up her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and hauling in 14 rebounds. Amber Calvin(Fayetteville, NC) led the Lady Broncos with 15 points, despite the fact that the Lady Rams employed a Box-and-1 defense built around stopping her.
Middleton continues to lead the conference in rebounding, at 11.2 per contest. She scores 13.1 ppg and is one of two Lady Broncos averaging double-figure scoring.
Calvin is averaging 14.8 points per game, third-best in the conference. She is also the CIAA's seventh-best 3-point shooter (28.9 percent) and third-best free throw shooter (86.9 percent).
Akysia Resper(Concord, NC) is fourth in the conference in assists, at 3.7 per contest. She is second in the league in steals, with 3.2 per game.
St. Augustine's (10-7, 5-3, 1-2) enters fresh off a 67-56 loss at Shaw. The Lady Falcons are 3-3 in their last six games, alternating wins and losses during that span.
Regime McCombs is the only St. Aug. player averaging double-figure scoring. She averages 12.8 points per game, good enough for 13th in the conference. She is first in made 3-pointers (51) and second in 3-point percentage (37.2 percent).
Terri Jacobs paces the Lady Falcons in rebounding, with 8.8 per game. That is good enough for fifth in the conference. She averages 9.5 points per game and has scored 10 points or more seven times this year. Fayetteville State and St. Augustine's have played one another 71 times, with the Lady Broncos holding a 43-28 lead in the series. FSU swept a pair of meetings last season, including a Southern Division championship-clincher last February 23. The Lady Broncos are in their 62nd season as a program and have compiled an all-time record of 594-401 and 338-243 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied ten 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 wins in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
