FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team heads to Salisbury on Wednesday evening to take on the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears in a CIAA Southern Division matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at New Trent Gym. The Lady Broncos are coming off a 70-59 win against Johnson C. Smith on Saturday to open division play.
Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State looks to stay unbeaten in CIAA play on Wednesday night on the road against Livingstone College. The Lady Broncos are the only undefeated team in conference action at 7-0.
FSU is coming off a 71-62 victory on the road at Johnson C. Smith to open Southern Division competition. Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) scored a game-high 19 points while tallying six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) added 16 points and Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) contributed 14.
Hanzer leads the CIAA, and ranks in the top 25 nationally, in scoring at 19.0 points per game. She also averages 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. The reigning CIAA Newcomer of the Week posted 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game last week for FSU as it defeated Bowie State and Johnson C. Smith.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is second on the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game. She ranks third in the league in field-goal percentage (52.9%), sixth in scoring and seventh in rebounding.
Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) leads the team in rebounding with 7.8 per game to rank her fourth in the league in that category.
Fayetteville State currently has the second-best offense in the CIAA averaging 73.4 points per game and rank fifth in scoring defense allowing 59.3 points. In games against conference opponents, FSU is second in scoring offense and scoring defense.
The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 571-394 and 324-239 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Johnson C. Smith Recap
Hanzer was one of three players to score in double figures with a game-high 19 points as FSU opened division play with a 71-62 win over Johnson C. Smith. Resper added 16 points and five assists while Person scored 14.
Fayetteville State finished the game 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the floor as it held a 34-28 advantage in points in the paint and 20-10 in points off turnovers. The Lady Broncos forced Johnson C. Smith into 21 turnovers.
The Lady Broncos did not attempt a free-throw in the first half; but made up for it in the second making 16-of-21 attempts.
The win was significant for FSU Head Coach Eva Patterson-Heath. The fourth-year head coach was coaching in her 100th career game for Fayetteville State.
Livingstone Scouting Report
Livingstone enters the matchup sporting a 6-10 overall record and 2-5 mark in conference play. The Lady Blue Bears are also 0-1 in division play after suffering a 101-68 defeat last Saturday to Shaw.
LC is under the direction of fifth-year head coach Angelyne Brown. She currently holds a 48-79 mark with the program and 231-249 record in 19 years as a head coach.
The Lady Blue Bears are led on offense by Cierra York with 13.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Ashley Walker also pours in 10.8 points per contest.
Livingstone ranks fourth in scoring offense (69.5) and 12th in scoring defense (70.5). In conference games only, the Lady Blue Bears are fourth in scoring offense and 12th in scoring defense.
All-Time Series With Livingstone
The contest will mark the 66th all-time meeting between Fayetteville State and Livingstone. The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series 49-16.
FSU swept Livingstone last season within a 10-day span. Fayetteville State won the first meeting 84-64 in Salisbury on Feb. 11, 2012 and followed with a 78-71 victory in Fayetteville on Feb. 20, 2012.
FSU entertains Winston-Salem State in Felton J. Capel Arena on Saturday, Jan. 26 in a CIAA Southern Division contest. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
