FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team eyes to end its three-game home stand with a victory on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. against the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Broncos are currently 2-0 on the home stretch after picking up a win over Virginia Union on Saturday night. FSU will then hit the road for its next two games against Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone.

BOWIE, Md. - Juliette Turner led all players with 25 points and 18 rebounds as Bowie State opened its CIAA season with a 69-49 victory over Fayetteville State on Thursday night. The win is the first this season for the Lady Bulldogs (1-8, 1-0) while the Lady Broncos (6-4, 0-1) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State’s defense was key in a 76-51 victory over Virginia Union on Saturday night. The Lady Broncos pulled down 20 of its 45 rebounds on the offensive side and converted them into 22 second chance points.

Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) paced the FSU offense with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. She was also 8-of-10 at the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Lady Broncos enter the contest with a 13-2 overall record and 5-0 mark in the league. FSU has the most wins out of any team in the conference and sits atop the CIAA Southern Division standings by one game over Shaw and Winston-Salem State.

Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) leads Fayetteville State in scoring this season with 18.8 points per game, which ranks her first in the CIAA in that category. She also ranks fifth in the conference in field goal percentage at 51.3%. Ashford is second on the team, and fifth in the conference, in scoring with 14.0 points per contest. She is fourth in field goal percentage at 54.3%.

Fayetteville State has the league’s second-best offense averaging 73.8 points per game while its scoring defense ranks fifth allowing 59.1 points per game. In conference games only, FSU is third in scoring offense and second in scoring defense.

The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 569-394 and 322-239 record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.

Virginia Union Recap
The defense of Fayetteville State forced a total of 28 turnovers and converted them into 44 points in a 76-51 victory over Virginia Union on Jan. 12.

Ashford’s 24 points led the Lady Broncos as they made 25-of-35 free-throws while limiting Virginia Union's free opportunities to 13.

Hanzer added 18 points and six steals in the effort while Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) grabbed 12 rebounds.

Bowie State Scouting Report
The Lady Bulldogs are under the direction of second-year head coach Renard Smith. Smith currently holds a 13-25 all-time record with the program, including a 4-9 mark this season. Bowie State is also 1-4 in conference play.

BSU is led on offense by Bria Robinson with 10.9 points per game. She is the only Lady Bulldog averaging in double-figures this season.

Bowie State ranks eighth in the CIAA in scoring offense scoring an average of 58.1 points per game and eighth in scoring defense giving up 63.5 points per contest. In conference games, the Lady Bulldogs are ninth in scoring offense and scoring defense.

All-Time Series With Bowie State
Monday night will mark the 44th all-time meeting between Fayetteville State and Bowie State. The Lady Bulldogs hold a 23-20 advantage in the series dating back to the 1980-81 season.

Bowie State has won the last two meetings in the series. BSU picked up a 69-49 win in Bowie, MD on Jan. 5, 2012 and 66-55 victory in Fayetteville on Jan. 6, 2011.

The Lady Broncos hit the road for back-to-back games beginning on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. against the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls. FSU then travels to Livingstone on Jan. 23.
