The Fayetteville State women's basketball team looks to start its CIAA season with five straight victories on Saturday evening when the Virginia Union Panthers visit Felton J. Capel Arena for a 5:30 p.m. showdown. The Lady Broncos are in the second of three consecutive home games that extends to Monday night. FSU is coming off a 72-59 victory on Thursday against the Lincoln (PA) Lions.


Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State has jumped out to a 4-0 start in CIAA play this season and is 12-2 overall. The Lady Broncos are on top of the CIAA Southern Division standings heading into the Saturday night contest and is the only unbeaten team in conference action.


FSU won its fourth conference game of the season on Thursday evening 72-59 over Lincoln (PA). Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) scored a team-high 18 points for Fayetteville State and was one of four players to score in double-figures. Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) and Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) had 12 points each while Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) added 11. It is the second straight game the Lady Broncos have had four players post double-digit points as Hanzer, Resper, Ashford and Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) accomplished the feat at Elizabeth City State on Jan. 7.

Fayetteville State currently ranks third in the CIAA in scoring offense averaging 73.6 points per game and is fifth in scoring defense allowing 59.7 points per contest. In conference games only, the Lady Broncos are third in scoring offense and scoring defense. Fayetteville State is shooting 45% overall as a team and 68% from the free-throw line.

FSU has the 35th-best scoring offense in the country while Hanzer is 11th in points per game (19.0).

Hanzer leads Fayetteville State in scoring and is third in rebounds per game (6.3). Coleman has a team-best 7.6 rebounds per game and Ashford is right behind her at 7.5. Ashford is the only other Lady Bronco to average double-digit points per game this season at 13.4.

The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 568-394 (.590) and 321-239 (.595) record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.

Lincoln (PA) Recap
The Lady Broncos led the entire way against Lincoln (PA) en route to a 72-59 victory at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU led by as much as 16 points as four players scored 10 or more points. Hanzer paced the Fayetteville State offense with 18 points as it shot 42.4% from the field.


FSU limited Lincoln (PA) to just one three-pointer on 17 attempts. The Lions shot just 25% (15-of-60) overall and were forced into 27 turnovers as FSU recorded 22 steals.

Virginia Union Scouting Report
Virginia Union comes into the contest against Fayetteville State with a 5-7 overall record and are 2-2 in conference play. The Panthers have defeated Winston-Salem State and Johnson C. Smith in conference games but dropped their last contest on the road against Shaw 80-50.


Ashle Freeman had a team-high 18 points for the Panthers while Parress Davis posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Freeman leads Virginia Union in scoring this season and is the only player scoring in double-figures.
All-Time Series With Virginia Union
Saturday night will mark the 43rd all-time meeting between Fayetteville State and Virginia Union. The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series 23-19. FSU is 11-1 in its last 12 meetings with the Panthers including six straight when playing in Fayetteville. Fayetteville State holds a 13-5 advantage when playing at Felton J. Capel Arena.


The Lady Broncos fell in their last meeting to the Panthers 70-53 in Richmond, VA on Jan. 19, 2012.

FREEMAN LEADS VIRGINIA UNION PAST LADY BRONCOS
Ashle Freeman scored 15 of her game-high 27 points in the first half as Virginia Union downed Fayetteville State 70-53 on Thursday night at Barco-Stevens Hall. The Lady Broncos (7-7, 1-4) trailed by 17 points just 18 seconds into the second half, only to surge back into the game. Fayetteville State got five straight points from Je'Lena Robertson (So., Houston, Texas), followed by five more quick ones from Alicia Person (So., Henderson, N.C.) to spark a 12-0 run, trimming the deficit to just five, 34-29, with 17:18 to go.
