FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s basketball team returns to Felton J. Capel Arena for the first time since Dec. 11 to take on Lincoln (PA) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Lady Bronco Storylines
Fayetteville State returns home for the first time in nearly a month to take on the Lincoln (PA) Lady Lions at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU enters with an 11-2 overall record and 3-0 mark in conference play.
The Lady Broncos spent the previous six games on the road compiling a 5-1 record. FSU posted a 3-0 conference record during the road swing and defeated then-17th ranked Nova Southeastern in Raleigh during the Shaw University Invitational.
Fayetteville State is off to its best start in conference play under fourth-year head coach Eva Patterson-Heath. The Lady Broncos previously started 2-1 in Patterson-Heath’s first season (2009-10) in which they won the CIAA Tournament Championship.
FSU is coming off a 75-70 victory over Elizabeth City State on Jan. 7. The contest was the CIAA’s “Marquee Matchup of the Week” as the Lady Broncos and Lady Vikings entered with the league's two best records.
Shuanda Ashford (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) had a game-high 21 points against Elizabeth City State while Kristen Hanzer (Sr., Youngsville, NC) posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Akysia Resper (Jr., Concord, NC) collected 16 points and seven assists. Alicia Person (Sr., Henderson, NC) scored 14 points.
Fayetteville State ranks third in the CIAA in scoring offense at 73.8 points per game and is fifth in scoring defense allowing 59.8 points per game. Hanzer leads the conference in scoring with 19.1 points per game while Ashford is third in field goal percentage at 53.9%. Tierra Coleman (Sr., Cameron, NC) is fourth in rebounds per game with 7.5.
The Lady Broncos are in their 61st season as a program and has compiled an all-time record of 567-394 (.590) and 351-239 (.595) record in the CIAA. Since joining the CIAA in 1953-54, Fayetteville State has tallied nine 20-win seasons including a school-record 25 in 1996-97. FSU has made five NCAA Division II Playoff appearances with the last coming in 2009-10.
Elizabeth City State Recap
Fayetteville State shot 49.1% from the field while converting on 20-of-25 free throw attempts (80%). The Lady Broncos went 12-of-24 overall in the second half and missed only three free throws (18-of-21). Fayetteville State outrebounded Elizabeth City State 41-36 and 8-6 in second-chance points.
FSU had four players scored in double-figures led by Ashford’s 21. Ashford finished 7-of-12 shooting and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Resper was also successful on six of her seven free-throw attempts.
Elizabeth City State managed to shoot just 38% overall and 62.5% (10-of-16) at the free-throw line.
Lincoln (PA) Scouting Report
Lincoln (PA) enters with a 6-7 overall record and 2-1 mark in conference play. The Lions are led by second-year head coach Jessica Kern. She has compiled a 13-29 overall record with the program. Lincoln (PA) is shooting 32% as a team and 58% from the free-throw line.
The Lions rank seventh in the CIAA in scoring offense with 62.7 points per game and is eighth in scoring defense giving up 63.7 points.
Lincoln (PA) has three players scoring in double-digits this season led by Denyse Moore’s 19.1 points per game. Cynthia Johnson is scoring 13.5 points per contest followed by Tahlar McIntosh with 11.7 points.

The Lady Broncos lead the all-time series over Lincoln (PA) 6-0 and 3-0 when playing in Fayetteville.
Fayetteville State scored a 70-68 victory in Lincoln last season and 61-53 win in Fayetteville on Jan. 13, 2011.

PERSON'S STEAL PRESERVES FIRST CIAA WIN FOR LADY BRONCOS
Alicia Person came up with a steal with 1 second remaining in overtime to preserve a 70-68 victory by the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos over Lincoln on the road on Thursday night.
The win, which Person (So., Henderson, N.C.) closed out by making a free throw after being fouled following her steal, snaps a four-game losing streak for Fayetteville State (7-6, 1-3). It is the first CIAA win of the season for the Lady Broncos.
